Awabeads

Waistbeads are an ancient African body adornment tradition. Depending on the tribe and its traditions, it can mean anything from an indicator of wealth, social position, or marital status. Waistbeads are often used in ritual ceremonies to celebrate the passage from childhood to puberty and given to the young girl so only her husband could remove them the night of the wedding.  Hidden from view underneath women’s clothing is that waist beads increase body-consciousness in a way that lingerie does – they are provocative.
